Supplementary Feeding of Grazing Beef Cattle

چکیده

Some 60% of Australia% beef cattle are located in the tropics and subtropics, grazing, in general native pastures of low digestibility and N content. Production per head is low, as also are reproductive rates. The nutritional problem centres around the low contents of phosphorus, sulphur and nitrogen in pastures from June to December. This paper discusses responses in breeding cattle to supplements of protein meal, or to phosphorus when legumes have been oversown into native pastures.

A 3-year field evaluation of pasture rotation and supplementary feeding to control parasite infection in first-season grazing cattle: dynamics of pasture infectivity.

A 3-year grazing trial (2002-2004) was conducted on a commercial beef cattle farm in south-central Sweden to assess different methods of parasite control. This paper focuses on the dynamics of the free-living larval stages, whereas data on performance and within-host parasitological variables are presented in a complementary paper. Each year in May, 4 groups of 10 first-season grazing (FSG) ste...

Social behavior of grazing beef cattle: Implications for management

This paper reviews current knowledge of the social behavior of grazing beef cattle and discusses how that knowledge can be applied to rangeland cattle management. Cattle herds are composed of social subgroups that influence grazing distribution on rangeland. Grazing distribution is, in part, a learned response; therefore, management strategies that alter the social composition and structure of ...

Nutritional Disorders in Beef Cattle - FSA3071

Nutritional disorders associated with both forage and feed consump tion can have a large impact on the profitability of beef cattle operations. Forages are an important component of beef cattle production systems in Arkansas. Most cowcalf and stocker cattle enterprises in Arkansas rely heavily on foragebased nutritional programs. Forages are used for both livestock grazing and hay production...

Alternative Feeds for Beef Cattle

As a beef cattle nutritionist, two things have been drilled into to me from early on: 1) the cheapest way to feed the cow is to let her “harvest” her own feed by grazing, and 2) corn is the cheapest source of energy for fed cattle. However, fluctuations in corn and land prices in more recent years have raised questions regarding the truth in these old adages. The objectives of these proceeding ...

Trace Mineral Supplementation of Grazing Beef Cattle

The nutrient quality of forage, particularly perennial warm-season grasses, is often lacking in trace mineral content to supply the requirements of most all classes of grazing cattle. Since forage is the most significant contributor to the trace mineral nutrition of grazing beef cattle, it is important to consider these deficits and how they may impact the performance of the cattle consuming th...
